’90s Perfumes That Smell Like Pure Nostalgia

90s perfumes

When we think of the ‘90s aesthetic, minimalism and effortlessness often come to mind—think Calvin Klein ads featuring Kate Moss (more about that later!) and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s signatures. Designers like Issey Miyake (also more on that below), Comme des Garçons, Martin Margiela, and Helmut Lang embraced this shift, becoming some of the defining designers of the era with their understated approach. After the lavishness of the 80s, restraint seemed like a refreshing response.

The same can be said of the most popular perfumes during the ‘90s. Fresh and clean compositions were crowd favorites; they were centering, grounded, sexy even. Many were unisex, like a good pair of boyfriend jeans. Many were, and still are, relevant to this day.

Having written all this, it’s obvious that we’re still thinking about these iconic ’90s fragrances—are they also on your list?

The 90s Perfumes We Still Think About

ISSEY MIYAKE L’eau D’issey Eau De Toilette

In 1992, Issey Miyake launched this floral aquatic fragrance, a scent that became just as iconic as its minimalist, frosted cone-shaped bottle. Inspired by water, the source of life, it blends lotus, rose water, lilies, water peony, exotic woods, and osmanthus. The result is a gentle reminder that the essential can also feel like luxury.

CALVIN KLEIN Obsession

In 1993, Calvin Klein sent an 18-year-old model Kate Moss and her then-boyfriend, 20-year-old photographer Mario Sorrenti, to the Virgin Islands with one assignment: to capture young love. After 10 days, they returned with photos that would become the campaign for Obsession. While the fragrance was technically launched in 1985, it is this iconic campaign that defined it, capturing its sensual blend of notes: vanilla, bergamot, mandarin orange, sandalwood, orange blossom, amber, vetiver.

CLINIQUE Happy

Launched in 1998, Clinique Happy is a floral fruity fragrance created by Jean Claude Delville and Rodrigo Flores-Roux. It opens with a fruity blend featuring blood orange, mandarin, apple, and plum, before settling into a soft floral heart of lily, freesia, orchid, and rose. A delicate white musk lingers in the dry down, tying everything together with an airy, feel-good finish. It is happiness in a spritz

CALVIN KLEIN One

Who could talk about the era without talking about CK One? The unisex fragrance, arguably the defining scent of the ‘90s, arrived in 1994 and was a breath of fresh air. It opens with a bright rush of citrus and bergamot and papaya, softened by a clean floral heart of jasmine and rose, before settling into a cool base of musk, sandalwood, and green tea. The effect is understated but intimate, perfect for everyday wear.
