Honestly, this perfume made me think of one person in particular: a teacher from my middle school. Ms Gilbert was tall and willowy, with short dyed black hair. She loved opera, was always dripping in heavy silver jewellery, wafted around in silks and shawls, and had a huge framed print of Friedrich Heyser’s Ophelia in her office. I’m not sure I appreciated just how cool she was at the time, but Ms Gilbert, wherever you are—I get it now. This one’s for you.

Not Your Grandmother’s Tuberose Perfume

You can’t escape (nor would you want to) the fact that this is a tuberose perfume. Billowing, pillowy soft tuberose is the defining note here, though that undersells how well blended it is—there’s more complexity than a single-note impression suggests (and that smoky tobacco in the base certainly helps give it a grounded, after-dark character). 

As we’ve written about before, tuberose was considered pretty scandalous in Victorian England.
