Great fresh, soapy designer fragrance
Prada?s Luna Rossa is one of those designer fragrances that smell like 100 others yet has something all its own. It opens with a huge lavender top note. It?s lavender over-dose! - in a good way. It?s not a cheap, air-freshener lavender but rather a high quality and refined lavender aroma that is quite lovely and even though it?s strong, it?s not exactly feminine, although, I can see this fragrance being marketed as unisex (it?s marketed as masculine, obviously).
Along with the lavender you get a very nice tart citrusy scent from the bitter orange. This was a very nice addition as they could?ve just used mandarin or something similar but it would?ve been sweeter than it is. I think the bitterness gives it something unique and all its own.
In the heart you have mint and clary sage. Unfortunately, the mint isn?t very strong. I wish it was a little prominent and long-lasting as it?s a great addition. The clary sage gives it a wonderful ?cold? feeling that gives the fragrance its nice fresh, clean, soapy feeling.
The base has ambrette (musk mallow) and ambroxan. I don?t have much experience with ambrette so I can?t speak much as to what it adds to the fragrance but I can somewhat imagine what it would smell like if it wasn?t there when you peel away the other fragrances.
Ambroxan, on the other hand - well I just love ambroxan. I love everything that has ambroxan in it: Dior Sauvage, Etat Libre d?Orange Hermann, Versace Dylan Blue. It?s like the fragrance world?s version of MSG to me. I wish more niche fragrances carried ambroxan, or that I?d find them, anyway.
The ambroxan gives it a beautiful, mild, woody scent and it really ties it all together.
As far as longevity, I was surprised. It lasted a fair amount of time, especially being a fresh fragrance. It lasted for 4-5 hours with a strong projection of about 45 minutes to an hour. I think the ambroxan helps it here.
All in all a great fragrance. I wonder how it?d do with a water or sea accord added to it? Especially since it?s named after a sailboat. I do love it, though and I?d definitely recommend it.
