Music is essential to life. I was born in a house of blues—dad’s from Chicago. At 9 I went to camp on an island. Cool older punk kids showed me the Misfits and the Pixies. (One of those kids was actually comedian Rob Delaney). That summer was ruled by Doolittle. The provocative lyrics. The cackle of Frank Black. I absorbed it in the summer heat. August humidity. Young romance. Our Debaser scent is hot, humid, sexy. Green stems, deep purple fig, soft blond woods, a wet white ethereal musk, and the coumarin-vanillic note of tonka bean. -D.S.

Tonka beans are tiny, shriveled, black seeds from the Tonka tree found in Central and South America. Their slightly sweet, vanillic, and smoky hay scent adds a spicy, gourmand edge to a fragrance. Tonka beans work best in spicy and sweet scents featuring similar notes: clove, vanilla, heliotrope, bitter almonds, labdanum, cinnamon, etc. Their vanilla and hay-like scent is ideal for fall or winter, but usually blends well enough to wear any time you need a little sweet, warm spice to liven up the citrus or wood notes in a fragrance.

    Earthy and spicy with no sweetnesss
    When I first sprayed this, I got grass and a little bit of sweetness which was great. As it dried down, it started to smell spicy almost and very earthy with no sweetness or warmth to it. If you like very grassy, earthy scents you will probably love this but it was just not for me.

    VERY Earthy
    Initially, this had a nice kind of scent. A few seconds later though, once it was dry, it was like smelling soil. Like walking around a garden, but nothing is planted yet, and it’s just the stench of dirt. I had to wash it off and use a different perfume because the earthy smell is so overwhelming. Not for me at all.

    Transformative
    The first day I wore this, I wasn’t sure I liked it. It was heavy coconut water and bergamot then dried down to wood. The next couple of days it seemed more blended and I caught less coconut and more green. It has fairly good staying power. I think I’m in love.

    Bergamot forward
    The blond wood and bergamot notes make it smell like sitting next to a fresh cut Christmas tree. I dont particularly want to smell like a christmas tree but the scent is definitely interesting enough.
