November 1695, Mexico City. Deep inside the halls of the Royal Convent of Jesus Maria, a group of reverent nuns prepares a Baroque recipe of spiced Cocoa. The brew is infused with an assortment of chilies that tempt rapture, and the air is rich with the scent of exotic spices. After centuries of safe-keeping within this closed world, their secrets are finally revealed to the senses.

kind of old-fashioned, but likely very dependent on skin-chemistry
I don't like using the old lady term, but this scent is very old-fashioned. I think it clashes with more modern preferences ppl seem to have for clean scents. I don't think someone smelling it on you would be offended, but I also would not want to be stuck smelling this on myself all day. I liked the notes that were in the description, but they didn't play out in this perfume the way I imagined, maybe because of skin chemistry? It smelled very different on a piece of paper compared to on my own skin. I preferred it on the paper bc it smelled sharper and spicier there so that there was something cutting through the floral/powdery background. For me, it ended up smelling too warm and stuffy. Not vanilla-y warm. Warm like being stuck in a ballroom dance class with a powdered wig on. Idk why, that is LITERALLY what this perfume makes me think of when I wear it.
Smelled like old lady. I only like it if I smell it closely but otherwise its a very old fashioned scent.
The notes were exactly like the description. However I smelled a bit of licorice (I really dislike that smell). There was an old lady like scent in it as well (not sure what the smell is). If those two things were not present I would have loved it. The chocolate And cinnamon smell could have been slightly Stronger that would have made me love the scent. My boyfriend liked it after some hours of sitting on my skin. A little goes a long way with this one.
Not my type but my daughter loved it
Not for me
Smelled like old
I picked this scent at the recommendation of someone else and am actually surprised how much I like it. It's not in my usual scent family, but I'm addicted. At first spray, it had a very "old lady" smell to it, but after I smelt it on my skin, it changed. It smells like a spicy incense to me and I can definitely smell the church inspiration behind it. Sniff deeper, though, and you can smell the sweet vanilla and chocolate. Love it.
I really LOVED this scent. This and journey man have been the best scents so far
This smelled like an older lady perfume. It was not for me at all!!!
The description is chocolate, chile, cinnamon and vanilla, like a beautiful mole from my land. It is gorgeous.
Old Fashion Scent
I picked this one because was supposed to have hints of chili and cinnamon but it smelled more like patchouli and mildew. I was incredibly disappointed because I was really looking forward to this scent.
I love my great Aunts, but this smell is NOT WHAT THE DESCRIPTION SAID! IT SMELLS LIKE 1970S Older persons perfume!
A touch of cocoa, but a little too powdery
This scent is very sweet, with cocoa and vanilla notes. I felt like the spicy notes of the chili were not very strong, but I did get a hint of cinnamon. Not my favorite scent but I also didn't hate it. Slightly too powdery for me. Good for autumn, because it is a warm scent.
I love the beautiful smell of the perfume, I wear it everyday after I shower. thank you scentbird.
Arquiste Anima Dulcis
This perfume starts as a friend and ends as a lover. The initial spray, was a shock into alerted interest. The pepper start, almost citric in character, wakes the senses. I was startled. I knew that I liked it, but the composition was elusively vitrine, and surprisingly complex, for having only boasted 4 compounds to its structure. I had envisioned Mexican hot chocolate - sweet, spicy, tranquil and warm. But as we began to encounter the heart and base structure of this scent, a very assertive and clean cacao emerges. It arrives in hand with a bright cinnamon flare, as if each had been freshly ground for the wearer. Vanilla's sensibilities, amplified by floral whispers, transcend into the fully developed experience. Even with a base of familiar accords, there is nothing about this to take for granted. The smell is organic and tempestuous - warming on the skin, and infusing the wearer with a sultry, smoking, incense halo. This perfume holds the spirit of both angel and demon. Soft like a woman's curves, and as dangerous as her intentions. My nose returns again and again, until the final rapture. Keenly aware, and ready to surrender to its charms, I am madly in love with this creation!
Spicy hot chocolate
Definitely smells like you doused yourself with chili oil at first, but after a bit some powdered hot chocolate and pillowy vanilla comes through. I adore it!
Spicy, yes, but the vanilla and cocoa smooth the chili and cinnamon to create an incredible cozy scent. This is my first Scentbird choice that definitely warrants a full-size purchase!
It’s strong enough to last all day but not overpowering, it smell amazing it is better then what I was expecting, I was worried that it would be a little strong but it is now one of my favorites.
To be honest, I never tried it on my skin or even sprayed it. I didn't need to, because it was so incredibly strong that I could easily smell it just from the vial. And once I smelled just that little bit, I had to get it as far away from me as possible before it gave me a headache. It's that bad. The notes sounded so enticing and like an appropriate fall fragrance. But it's just SO powdery. It really smells like a 100 year old lady's perfume. It makes me gag. Reading the notes again, I went back and actually sprayed the fragrance on something to see if it smelled different after several minutes, and to see if I could discern the notes. I guess I can sort of smell the cacao but at the same time, I don't want to try anymore. I hate the way this smells. I'm sure it smells great on other people but just... no. Not for me.
Warm and mildly sweet/spicy.
This scent needs a minute to warm up on the skin and then you can smell the mix of sweet and spicy. It smells like more of a cinnamon spice to me, and it's a little reminiscent of a nice latte or something. The lasting power is meh, it's pretty strong on initial application. Not my favorite but I don't regret getting it.
not great. too powdery
I wasn't really sure what to expect based on the description. It's really spicy. The chili infusion and the cinnamon really come through. I also get a hint of vanilla. I don't really smell the cocoa scent though. The surprise was that it is somewhat powdery smelling when I spray it on my skin. When I sprayed it on a paper sample it didn't really seem to have that but something about spraying it on me made it just a little powdery. I do like it but I don't know that it's my favorite.
Nice smell but its not for me.
It is a nice scent; however, it is a bit strong for my taste. It kind of gave me a headache.
Unique Dark Scent!
The description is very accurate. I prefer more floral scents, and this was absolutely not that! Very smoky, with dark musky underlying note. Very nice but not for me!
Did not like
It smelled like perfume old ladies wore in the 1970’s...
Not for me
Really thought I would love this based on the description, but to me it smells like just another powdery “old lady” fragrance.
nice fall scent
its a bit strong at first but its a nice warm smell after its aired some
I am now a huge fan of Arquiste! Sydney rock pool is still my favorite but this is another great scent!
it really does smell like an old lady perfume. very powdery and a little spicy. not a fan at all but it kept being suggested.
So very disappointed!
I took the quiz and this was the scent it suggested. This was my first scent using Scentbird so I was very excited to receive it. The smell is way too strong and doesn’t smell anything like the scent profile to me. It is a very old fashioned smell.
Cocoa is nice. Most male friends say it smells like a typical grandparents fragrance. I think it has more to it than just that. Everything is relative. Very warm and chocolatey. Not a bad wildcard fragrance for your collection.
It smelled horrible, I could not believe how nasty this scent was! 🥴
Not for me
Liked the scent description, but its just too strong and overpowering.
sweet and spicy
you can definitely smell the cinnamon and the Chile pepper but this is the perfect blend of sweet and spicy... leaving beyond a warm scent that just works for me
this is an interesting gourmand with deep and unusual base notes. not your typical baked goods gourmand scent
Fluent A Nice Book Read
Notes were indescribable but proof readable. I enjoyed the subtle texture, but most days did not it was very French like.
THIS is what I think of when I hear “old lady perfume”. This was not it
nice fragrance that makes people stop and ask you what scent you are wearing.
The smell is just ok. It’s a little strong and I don’t think it smelled great on me.
Smells like a spicy campfire!
This wasn't what I expected from the notes- I was thinking it would be a spicy hot chocolate gourmand type scent. Instead, it is a smoky, warm, sexy scent. It is really loud when first sprayed, but calms down quickly, and some of the dry cocoa scent comes into play. It smells amazing on both myself and my husband. This is one I would love a full bottle of. If you are expecting sweet vanilla and chocolate with a hint of spice, you will probably be disappointed.
Loved this scent!
I didn’t like this smell at all gave me a headache
Didn’t smell like I expected
Unfortunately not really long-lasting on my warm skin.
My new favorite flavor...lol
OMG......totally in love with this scent....not too overbearing .......subtle.....long lasting.....the scent unfolds the longer it stays on your skin and I have to stop myself from lifting my wrist to my nose to inhale more , only because people think I'm nuts for smelling my wrist so much....lol
Sexy and downright Edible
Warm, delicious, and sultry. Like Dolce de Leche with an attitude.
I love this
This perfume is one of the best ones ive received from here. It is strong, though so if you like a light perfume i would not recommend.
Chili Peppers & Chocolate? Thumbs Up!
This fragrance responds perfectly to my body chemistry. The smell is exactly as described: first notes of chocolate and chili pepper with a vanilla, spicy dry down. I recommend this if you like Dior's Hypnotic Poison; that has been my favorite fragrance for twenty plus years and Anima Dulcis channels the same energy with a more masculine vibe. It is close to incense as others have described and has a strong character. It is definitely a winter fragrance, lasts a long time, and is pretty distinct.
Grown man Cologne !
This cologne smells good ! One spray is all you need . Smooth , masculine , woodsy scent with a hint of sweetness in it .
Did not smell anything like the description. I didn't get any of the notes. Very spicy, like an incense.
Arquiste Architects Club blew me away, so I was expecting great things from this scent. While it definitely smells of quality, it’s just a little too difficult to wear. I think if it were a touch sweeter, and ventured more into gourmand territory, it would be easier to pull off. In general, it is definitely a spicy incensey smell. Maybe better suited for a man. Definitely not summer appropriate.
this is a very nice scent. sweet. spicy and not over powering.
Little goes a long way
It’s a bit strong and lasted for a long time. I really enjoyed its scent, it held very true to what it said it’d smell like.
Too rich for me
Very rich "sweater" scent. If you like Shalimar, you'd probably like this.
Very happy with the choice!
It smelled as spicy as I hoped!
Not a huge fan. I was hoping for something with a little bit more of a dry sweetness and spice with the chili and cocoa notes.
Very nice scent. Smelled better than I expected
All weather spiced chocolate
This smells like a lovely, spiced, and not too sweet chocolate gourmand on me. There’s a hint of flowers in there (jasmine perhaps?), slightly woody, complex without being cloying or heavy. Moderate diffusion, but quite long lasting. This will not make you smell like a chocolate truffle or cookie - it’s not the super foody type of gourmand. This is a proper chocolate-flecked perfume.
i chose this cause my dad used to wear it, really don't like it but it is a good memory
not my fav
not my fav
Not as interesting as other Arquiste scents.
A little cloying at first but then...gone. Pretty forgettable.
Smell like old ladies
Don't like it at all
If the 90's were a scent, this would be it. It sorta reminds me of insense.
Not for me
Smells like expired old spice.
Smells just like Obsession. Just an outdated fragrance.
Really warm scent and spicy would be good for a date night.
Meh, just didn't do it for me.
This is just a sweet and sexy scent. It’s refreshing and a great way to start my day. Now if I can just find it to purchase a full bottle!!!!!!!
perfect for winter
I enjoyed this a scent during the winter. heavily cinnamon but lightly powdery. similar to estee Lauder classic Cinnabar, yet still unique.
Not for me
Kind of smelled like a grandma to me. I gave it to my aunt and she loved it. I’m 17 and it just wasn’t my taste.
Among finest fragrances I've ever worn! Numerous allergies and not all scents work with my body chemistry: this one is amazing!
love this scent.. warm and cozy..
Excellent, adventurous scent with all the comforts of home!
It smells old.
My Grandma's scent
This smells very elderly grandma! It reminds me of something from the 70s and not in a good way! It is very strong and overbearing! I will be discarding this one! The smell makes me feel nauseous!
Better after awhile
As I like several Arquiste scents, I thought I would give this one a try. At first it is really strong, but then it calms down to a smooth, sweet scent. Not my favorite, but worth a try. Smell lasts about 1 hour then not much at all.
Smells like old lady perfume not unisex at all.

Didn’t smell at all as described. No cocoa or vanilla scents.
It didn’t have any of the notes described. It was very heavy and astringent. There was no cocoa, or vanilla anywhere in the scent
Elegantly woody, potent yet not overwhelming. Really gives you a “professional” smell

Warm and unique
This fragrance doesn't smell a lot like my expectations of it reading the notes, but it surprised me in a good way. It has a lot of oakmoss and "chypre-ness" to it at the beginning, so much so that it reminded me of another fragrance I own- Bottega Veneta. But then after about an hour it just becomes this yummy, warm, spicy scent. It lasts a long time on me- I can smell it on my clothes the next day and even a bit on my skin too.
Not What I was Expecting
This fragrance is very dry; that's not necessarily a bad thing. But, I was truly hoping for much more sweetness from the cocoa and more kick from the chile. It's hard to say if I don't like this because of my own expectations of what it would be, or if I don't like it. Still, for now, this one is just a miss for me.
Smells like my grandma's perfume from the 40s
I absolutely love this line's, "the architects club" so when I spritzed anima dulcis it was a double let down. It is cloying, like walking through the mall at Christmas, and it's flat, meaning one dimension even over time. Maybe it needs to be worn by a man to bring something out of it.

Rich, old lady perfume
This has a very vintage feel to it, like a modern day successor to the decadent, rich, dense perfumes of years past. I can't imagine it going over well today.

Too much Musk over Spice...
I love Architect’s Club by Arquiste, so I thought I’d try another one of their fragrances; the notes and the description of this one seemed a mysterious and glorious combination. In truth, how can anyone desire to wear this? The musky aroma is completely overwhelming all else! Stereotypical grandmother’s or grandfather’s cologne! Very nauseating! Excruciatingly disappointed. 😞 Considering cancelling my Scentbird subscription after this one. Can’t seem to choose enough of the right scents based on notes that I love.
It certainly is a spicy scent, quite strong at first. It's really different-if you want a mysteriously spicy scent this is for you. I didn't love it but I didn't hate it......I really smell the cocoa and cinnamon - makes it a very warm scent. Definitely a winter scent.
This is a heavy perfume. I wouldn’t have anticipated the scent by looking at the notes. I would by far describe this as having more “oriental” fragrance notes than gourmand notes, despite its delicious profile. The scent completely overpowered me. It strikes me as something that an older woman may wear, but then it may just be offering back a style of smell that has become vintage. The silage is fantastic and it never wears off, so be sure you like it.
Powdery and wearable
I love this. At first it smelled a bit more fresh and floral than I expected, but the subtly sweet vanilla and cocoa are more noticeable when on. There definitely is a floral background that keeps it from smelling like a cupcake. Or maybe it's the chili and I'm just not accustomed to it. I've been wearing this nonstop since I got it.

Not what I expected
Once this dries down, if I smell it directly, I can smell the spicy notes from the description. However, the overall scent of this perfume definitely does remind me of just standard older lady perfume. When I first sprayed it, it actually smelled so much like a perfume my mom owned in the 80's that I could picture the bottle. I'm super disappointed.
this makes me smile.
I'm really enjoying everything I've sampled from Arquiste, and I love this one – maybe it's because spicy kitchens and sweet gardens are such happy places for me. It reminds me of the best molé in town, dry roasted and ground spices.
My woman bough me a Scentbird subscription for my birthday. She also chose my first scent. She chose Anima Dulcis as my first choice/delivery. I was happily surprised. I loved it. She loved it on me. So much so, that I am going to get it again for next month. This scent is unique & different.

Old school hollywood perfume AKA a Grandma perfume
I would say that most people under the age of 40 and definitely under the age of 30 are probably not going to be into this perfume. I personally love strong perfumes like Amouage's Lilac Love Tuberose Love, so if you like those, you may like this (there's no floral compound here, however). It is *very* strong at first, but mellows out, at least on me, within the hour. It has a lot of gourmand notes but I don't find it to be very sweet or foodie like. I read another review that described it as unsweetened chocolate, and I would agree - that definitely describes the dry down on me. A little musky and spicy, maybe kind of like unsweetened Mexican hot chocolate at dry down.

Far from being my favorite.
I really wanted to like this based on the description. This fragrance is listed as a unisex scent but I would say it's much more on the feminine side. I've always been attracted to sweet and/or fruity scents but this one missed the mark for me. I get a hint of vanilla and a powdery smell but not too much on the spice side until it begins to fade. The undertones seem very musky and outdated. It reminds me of an old Avon perfume for women over 50 (no ageism intended). The longevity lasted about 4-5 hours for me. I'm not sure exactly what to do with this fragrance but it is probably my least favorite of all the scents I've received on Scentbird.
