The Weather
Reality check: it’s mid August, the heat is high, the breeze is basically nonexistent, and this isn’t even our first (or second) heatwave of the summer. We’re starting to look toward autumn but we’re still stuck in August’s sweltering grip. We’ve had nearly a full summer’s worth of adventures (in fact the ‘summer of 2025’ is kind of already a thing in our minds). The novelty of those first hot days is long gone. But we can’t get off this ride, so we’re buckling in for these final scorching weeks.
The Mood
These afternoons hit completely different. We’re talking full dog day afternoon territory where time literally slows down, the air just hangs there, and every moment feels heavy with possibility. This is when you give yourself permission to put that to-do list away, lie down, and dive straight into daydream mode. Remember summer’s best moments, mentally prep for September’s chaos. Before this season slips away, let’s sink into its languid embrace one more time.
The Trend
This is the weather for gossamer-light scents with shimmering, almost-magical qualities. You could even say it’s the perfect moment to explore the current trend for intimate, second skin scents. We’re talking airy, ethereal fragrances with low projection – the ones people have to lean in to experience. These are the ones we wear for our own pleasure, more than anything else. And pleasurable they certainly are – glimmering, superbly soft, almost… transcendent? (Or maybe that’s the heat just going to my head.) One thing’s for sure: this new wave of transparent, ultra-sheer compositions are exactly what these end-of-summer days call for.
The Science
There are certain ingredients that have become the calling cards of transparent perfumery: hedione, which encourages notes to unfold, float and aerate; weightless ozonic notes; ISO E Super for intimate, close-to-skin diffusion; and Ambroxan for that barely-there musky backdrop. These molecules don’t just smell incredible—they literally change how fragrance moves through space, giving that aerated effect that’s so perfect for drowsy summer afternoons.
Liis Floating
We couldn’t talk about ethereal fragrances without mentioning Liis perfumes, one of our favorite modern perfumers for close-wearing, airy scents. Our Liis pick for those too-hot-to-move afternoons is Floating. An offering built around juicy peach, its buoyant lightness transcends the straightforward ‘fruit’ note and instead becomes a gateway to sweet summer daydreams. Liis Floating is available now on Scentbird.
Lake and Skye 11:11
Opening with breezy ozonic notes, 11:11 perfectly captures what it feels like to be inside a cloud. Think laundry drying in the wind, minimalist and hyper-fresh in the best possible way. It’s airy, floaty, and deeply comforting. This ethereal fragrance absolutely nails that ‘your skin but better’ effect, and you know what? On slow, sweltering hot days that’s exactly what we need.
Tocca Giulietta
Refreshing, romantic, and fleeting, this airy composition layers Bulgarian rose and ylang ylang with green apple and pink tulips over a heart of lily of the valley and lilac. It’s a soft-focus daydream, the most unapologetically feminine of our list, but gossamer-light and ethereal with it. Think walking through a garden at dawn, dew on the grass, the scent of flowers floating softly past. Tocca Guilietta is available now on Scentbird.
DS & Durga Steamed Rainbow
Like a sprinkler in a garden refracting the rainbow as you jump through it, this is bright, fleeting and refreshing, a blend of weightless water and delicate colour. Red mandarin and orange give way to yellow elemi resin, then green cedar and blue almond flower, finishing with indigo grass and violet. Ethereal, evocative, dreamlike… and just what we want to wrap ourselves up in for our next August siesta. DS & Durga Steamed Rainbow is available now on Scentbird.
Penhaligon’s Luna
Luna really does sing, with a freshly grated zest quality that’s so alive it almost fizzes. That effervescent energy creates the perfect setup for juniper berry to sweep in, and suddenly you’re wearing the most sophisticated gin and tonic imaginable. The top notes have this beguiling glimmer that’s both refreshing and completely captivating. Ethereal Luna is named after the moon, but still perfect for when the sun’s at its height.
So there you have it—five gossamer companions for these final, languid weeks of summer. When the heat feels endless and time moves like honey, these are the fragrances that understand the assignment. Light enough not to overwhelm, beautiful enough to make even the most drowsy afternoon feel a little magical.
