Let’s talk about Givenchy—not the couture we can’t afford, but the fragrances we absolutely can. This is the house Audrey Hepburn treated like a personal atelier, the one dressing Zendaya and Bad Bunny for their biggest red-carpet moments.
Beginnings
The backstory: Founded by Hubert de Givenchy in 1952, the house soon dressed everyone from Jackie O to Grace Kelly to Sophia Loren (basically, if photographers were climbing over each other to take photos of her, Givenchy dressed her).
Current Day
Few could forget a heavily-pregnant Kim K’s arriving at the 2013 Met Gala in custom Givenchy, or modern-day princess Meghan Markle marrying her Prince wearing a custom wedding gown, complete with a 16-foot veil.
Today, the house’s Creative Director is Sarah Burton—the British designer who inherited Alexander McQueen‘s kingdom. Fun fact: in the late 90s Alexander McQueen also spent several years as Head Designer at none other than… Givenchy.
Burton’s Givenchy still owns the red carpet—from Ariana Grande’s entire Wicked wardrobe to those architectural Bad Bunny fits that never fail to break the internet. When celebrities want to make fashion headlines (not just look nice), they call Givenchy.

Givenchy L’Interdit
Givenchy’s first perfume was L’Interdit—secretly created in 1954 just for Audrey Hepburn. When Hubert de Givenchy wanted to sell it to the public in 1957, Hepburn literally told him “I forbid you”—which gave the perfume its name (L’Interdit = “the forbidden”). She eventually came around, because of course she did—even Audrey Hepburn understood gatekeeping luxury is boring.
Givenchy Perfume’s olfactologist Françoise Donche describes L’Interdit as “passionate seduction” with “mischievous top notes” and “burning spice.” So to be clear—this was definitely not your grandmother’s demure floral, proven by the fact it was one of Freddie Mercury’s favorite perfumes.
