Yup, it's patchouli...
Patchouli is one of my straight-up "no" notes in oil-based perfumes, where it tends to dominate. I had hoped that as a complex blend, the patchouli might simply add a layer of roughness and be indistinguishable from sandalwood. Nope. I get patch and musk on this, which makes it solidly not my thing...

A new favorite
I love this scent. It's sweet but not overly. It is definitely subtle and doesn't last for the entire day on me. Still, it's a pretty one for spring.

This isn't quite what I expected, but I like it. It's a little more floral than I expected, but the fruity and spicy tones that come thru on the dry down are nice

Really couldn't stand this one. Smelled like bug spray & citronella candles. As I am not needing my perfume to ward off mosquitoes, this is going to be a hard pass for me.

Intoxicating and feminine
Pros: beautiful scent that's groovy and cozy at the same time. Fun anywhere but better at dance parties. Lasts very long! Good throw if you like that. Cons: Very strong. Not really a work/class thing, can get overpowering where all I smell is this scent, even while being careful! Still, it's a new favorite for the right occasion and it makes me feel very femme, which I don't often feel. So, nice!

A tad too sweet
I don't understand why so many reviewers say this is 'old lady perfume'. To me it is young and innovative, though a bit too sweet for my personal taste. I was hoping the patchouli would stand out more, but on me I mostly notice the chocolate and fruity notes.

Not for the sugar sweet masses
It's a niche, that's for sure. I like that it broadens my parfum library, gets me out of my comfort zone. Reminds me of Eau My Soul. I didn't "get it" at first but then I grew to love that one; I respect the quality & artistry. I might like this sprayed 1x at my bellybutton or lower back as a moody twist w/ something sweeter and more mainstream. I do after all like my gourmands...but I can't get past the bug spray vibe.....it is leathery & boozy spicey as well but I need more cozy here.......Amber 114 by this same house is a masterpiece!

Not for me
I hate patchouli, but loved the description and other notes in this perfume. The patchouli is pretty forward in the scent of it. It also had a cheap overly sweet bubblegum kind of vibe. I love the idea of this, but the smell is not for me at all.

A great surprise!
I picked Histoires 1969 out of frustration with Scentbirds website. After retaking the quiz 10 times, picking different profiles all I got was the same 12 perfume recommendations. So i set out on my own. Read about it, then tried to take it off queue. Long story short, it came today and I'm delighted with it. It's interesting with notes of clove, leather, whiskey and a citrus. I don't know all the perfume lingo yet but it lasts on my skin where so many others disappear. It's yummy and a bit mysterious. I am a 68 yr. old woman and I'm really tired of the old French standard perfume formulas with too many florals. I love the new wave perfumers and so far Tokyomilk Bulletproof and Nest Indigo are favorites. To all the other reviewers who use "old lady" as a descriptor, stop, it describes nothing and reveals your lack of imagination.

Bringing 60's Sexy Back
This is a deep, sexy, musky scent. It only takes a little and it lasts for hours - the patchouli & cloves really stand out. It takes me back in time, for some reason I can almost smell the whiskey and leather alongside the perfume. It's warm and spicy, very sensual. I feel like this fragrance is perfect for a fall/winter night out. But wherever you wear it, it'll definitely stand out.

Betty Boop cigar bar girl
I like this smell. But it smells like a high-class call girl - who (whom) went to Vassar but realized there was more money in filling the lonely void of rich men than trying to angrily bust through the glass-ceiling of the G-rated work world. If you like sexy, old-school, ox-blood leather cigar bars, you'll LIKE this scent. If you also like to picture a sassy, intelligent, seductive woman bouncing on the knee of a man twice her age under a cloud of Cuban smoke as she swills a perfectly toasted Cognac, you'll LOVE it.

Favorite thing ever.
This is the best thing ever. Similar to chloe nomad and the comfort scent at bath and body. I do not get the peach notes on my skin. It is straight up patchouli and vanilla WHICH I LOVE. This may be my first real purchase.

Sexy and Spicy
Someone mentioned this smelling like old woman perfume, seeing that I was a little hesitant to try it since another perfume I had was described in a similar fashion and I hated it. ... I am SO GLAD I did not take this one off my list. I absolutely adore it and no, I'm not old. I have gotten so many compliments while wearing this perfume. It has a nice blend of spicy without being burning your nose spicy. I would definitely consider getting this again, especially since my mother wants it now too and I think my current bottle is in danger of disappearing :)

Meh
I didn’t hate this scent, but it’s definitely not something I’d buy a full size bottle of. It’s very sexy and spicy, but also has that “old lady cloying” thing happening. A little goes a LONG way. Nice for cool months, would never wear this in the heat of summer.

Love this Scent
One reviewer mentioned an "old lady" scent - OK, I AM older (graduated HS in 1970), and there IS something about this scent that reminds me of a perfume my grandmother used to have - called "Carnation" - maybe it's the clove notes in this scent? I used to love going in her bathroom and just smelling her wonderful perfumes, so it's a good memory for me. I love spicy fragrances and this fits the bill without being overwhelming. I teach High School and few days go by when (female) students don't mention that I "smell good." This scent is a HIT for me and one I would likely purchase in a full size bottle.

I don’t love it, but friends seem to
My first impression is bug spray. Dries down to something like an elegant chocolate/gourmand scent. Boyfriend can smell the peaches in it. Friends comment that it smells nice.

Bug.Spray.
On me, it's just bug spray. So awful. Honestly, I don't even get a HINT of patchouli (how is that possible?). This was my first month with a subscription, and I'm just so disappointed. To me, it's not at all spicy, either. Just bug spray. Ok, maybe some grass clippings. I'm an Opium & Obsession (yes, still!) wearer... I can handle intense. This is just terrible on me. I would love to be able to put my finger on what it is that reads BUG SPRAY with my body chemistry, because this isn't the first time that's happened. Sigh.

It does smell like sexy bug spray.
I really didn't get many of the gourmand base notes of chocolate or citrus. But, the particular combination of patchouli and clove does illicit bug spray. It grew on me, but only as a way to add a little umami to other deeper scents.

Fantastic
This reminds me of Casmir or Miranda by Fragonard. It has a warm sweet patchouli scent with a subtle spice. Definitely a unisex fragrance. It wears powdery on me and has excellent silage and wear.

Mixed Feelings
There is something overwhelmingly earthy and grassy about the scent at first, almost suggestive of a farm (which probably sounds terrible in a women's perfume, but turns out to be less of an issue) it gives way and the cardamon and clove hints remain. As a male, I didn't find this scent to be exceptionally feminine, and I did not fall in love with it, but I wanted to try something a little out of the ordinary and I was not disappointed on that front.

Unique and interesting.
I was a little disappointed that it didn’t have more of a patchouli scent but it smells great. It’s more of a heavy scent, not light and floral or citrusy which I normally like. It’s my first scent to try without sampling and it was a hit!

Hair Spray
Another perfume that smells better in the bottle than it does sprayed. I pick up on a hint of clove but mostly patchouli mixed with like an alcohol, giving it a STRONG hair spray smell...Not one of the worst earthy smells I've experienced but definitely not for me.

Spicy, mysterious and sexy
I really enjoy spicy alternative fragrances and this one is delicious! my skin seems to turn things mostly to the sweet side and prefers spicier gourmand or strong white floral fragrances as opposed to soap and water clean, watery fragrances. This fragrance opened with a strong burst of spices, not too sweet and I didn't pick up on much of the Patchouli which is usually a very strong note. I was looking for something different and this fragrance is definitely it. Although very rich with spice this fragrance isn't too strong for daytime or summer time wear, I actually would have given it 5 Stars had it had more longevity and a bit more sillage. I definitely could see this as unisex and perfect for someone looking for something a bit off the beaten path.

Love this scent!
Sent was a little strange at first, but after it warms up it is truly something special and complex! I usually go for clean and citrus but this is a great standalone fragrance or also easily layer-able for a night out. I have started wearing it as my daily go to and have received LOTS of compliments.

Very interesting and unique, but not for everyone
This is definitely the most unique and fascinating scent I've received so far. At first spray I felt a bit conflicted because the clove and other spice notes are initially very strong, but after letting it settle for a while I quite like it. It's just slightly floral, and the peach note goes very well with the overall spiciness. Some people who reviewed it said it smelled masculine to them, but personally I'm not getting that at all. It's certainly complex and not overtly girly, but still has a feminine quality. If you enjoy trying out unique scents and don't mind spicy notes, I would highly recommend giving it a try. However, I can also see how some people don't like it. The spice notes are quite strong, especially the clove. They do settle down a bit after a while, but if that's not your thing, you should skip this one.

This history is best forgotten
Much more masculine than feminine, but not a clean scent as many unisex scents are. The clove was competing with the peach and unfortunately winning. I offered it to my husband, who took a whiff and said, no thanks. I thought perhaps it might smell better on him. My sister wasn’t interested in my offer either. On the plus side, in over two years of Scentbird, this is only the third time I was pretty much sickened by a scent.

Strong scent that doesn't last
I ordered this one because someone said it smelled more like cologne. I was excited. to get this one. However, when I tried it, the scent was over powering. Uh...no.
I tried to find the good in this scent, but I seem to be at a loss. I first tried it and thought, "Oh no." But after reading some of the positive reviews, I thought, perhaps, I should give Histoires De Parfums 1969 another chance. I did and I am sorry to say this is a definite no from me. I smelled wet hay and dirt upon application and dry down was not much better. It seemed like an indistinct candy aroma and smoke. I am glad for the chance to have tried this from Scentbird because it would have been an expensive mistake for me, if I had to buy the full size.

Nailed It
This is an incredibly interesting fragrance. I don't know why anyone would call it "bug spray", but to each their own. When I first received this, I was really on the fence about it as it's quite different from what I would normally choose (but that was the point of my trying Scentbird - to branch out of my comfort zone without spending $100 on a bottle of perfume). By far, I have gotten the most complements when wearing this fragrance - and from the widest variety of people. It also has AMAZING staying power. It's not an overpowering fragrance, but still lasts all day on me.

Trickery
I had read a review that this perfume smelled like bug spray, but the other reviews seemed to outweigh that one so I decided to try it. When I first received it, I gave the air a spritz and was so disheartened because indeed, all I could smell was perfume. I let it sit for a little while (I was already wearing something else) and decided later to ask my fiance what he thought of it. This time instead of spraying the air, I tested on my arm. Having it work with my body chemistry was all it needed. The initial hit of fragrance is a bit over powering, no doubt... But the longer it sits the more notes you can pull from it. It's incredibly long lasting as well. My first scent from scentbird and it was a success. 👍

Bought the Full Size
At first I hated this perfume. I totally got the Repel Natural bug spray scent, but then I wore it longer. It starts off very patchouli and citronella smelling. Then fades into fruity patchouli. It ends in chocolate and coffee. I love it. It's very earthy and spicy and gets better as the day wears on. If you're an earthy, hippie chick you'll love it. If you don't like the beginning notes, spray it a couple hours before you go anywhere. It's a very close to the skin scent and doesn't project very far. Unprompted, my husband said I smelled good each time I wore it. I bought the full size. It's a love it or hate it kind of scent, but if you hate it, try giving it a chance to wear on you.

Absolutely adored this pick! Smells earthy but never dirty, it's a clean patchouli scent. Smells so interesting, definitely veers towards feminine even though it's a unisex scent. I want a full bottle of this and would make it my signature scent, it's very warm and sensual but not too much, I would wear it casually. Too bad it's so pricey, but I am considering it none the less cause I love this scent.

This is a beautiful, light, inoffensive scent. When I first sprayed it on I thought, "nice but a little boring" because I usually like a heavier wood/resin presence. But as I keep catching whiffs of this intoxicating fragrance I think wow, it's really unique!

If you only smell the sprayer all you'll smell is lemon and pine. Time to grow up and give it a spray you chickens! It dries on the skin as a strong peach scent which is mostly what I get. The pachouli is light but there. This wears off on my just after lunch so around 5 hrs of wear. I liked it, but I wish I loved it.

I love this scent. It isn't what I would normally go for at all. It smells warm and Spicy like fall. I feel like it is a scent that develops as it sits on your skin. I will for sure get more in the future.

I REALLY wanted to love this perfume, but sadly I just couldn't. It's very spicy, and maybe even a sprinkle of woodsy. If you like D&G Light Blue, you'll probably like this too. The description made me want to try it, but I'm putting this one on the back of the dresser.

On me, this perfume was feminine and flowery, with a nice bite of spice. It put me in mind of a perfume I used to wear back in the day called Ici. Unfortunately, it is a very quiet, close to the skin scent, and it didn't wow me. Thanks to Scentbird, I now have so many perfumes that I will not invest in a bottle unless it makes me smell amazing.

I remember reading sometime ago that this perfume is/was a favorite of Angelina Jolie's, and I have to agree with her. I bought a full bottle of this and have used it all, sadly. It smells unlike anything else I've smelled and I absolutely adore it. It works so well with my skin chemistry and I always get tons of compliments. My only complaint is that I feel like it doesn't last very long and I have to reapply often. That's pretty typical for me, though. It seems my skin doesn't hold on to scents well.

1969 is indeed trying to capture La Revolution! The sweet peach note lingers throughout top, middle and base notes - which makes it maybe a little fruity teeny infantile. The patchouli however is there the entire time as well, behaved in the background, and if you are a patchouli lover you might fall in love with this combination. I do not detect a lot of gourmand despite the chocolate listed. I enjoy the scent even though my heart beats more for the lingering dark, opulent and heavy, which this is not.

I just received Histoires de Parfums 1969 and I really like it. I've worn it twice. If I wake up at night and can still smell it, I know I really like it when I inhale deeply while I am still half asleep. It goes on and to me it smells like sweet candy but then smooths out to warm wintery spice. I think it must be the combination of cardamom and patchouli. I think I will like this one more the more I wear it.

Opens with a slight touch of cardamom and rose. On my skin, it dries down to a cozy, chocolate gourmand with peach in the background. After about an hour, I get a light coffee note that rises and falls but the chocolate still reins supreme throughout. It is unique and the notes blend smoothly. I would definitely wear this in the Fall/Winter. It's lovely. If you like gourmands, you will probably like this fragrance.

It's OK. The fragrance notes were a much different experience for me than for some other reviewers - on me it's straight up Lemon Merengue Baby Powder. And it reminds me of another scent that I can't put my finger on. Not my favorite.

1969 is a pleasant but odd perfume. Don't get me wrong, it works really well my chemistry and I love wearing it. I just can't find the words to describe it. It's light and clean with a musky undertone. The only real drawback for me is that it gives me a slight headache if I spray to much so I find it good for the office when I want to smell nice but I don't it to linger.

Not at all what I was expecting given the price of this brand. If you want to smell like 1869 instead of 1969 then this is the perfume for you. It takes vintage to a whole nother' level. I thought it would be similar to Maison Martin Margiela Replica fragrances in that it evokes a time period or a place while still smelling modern enough to be wearable. Two thumbs down! The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because unfortunately it has intense staying power.

Not overpowering for a patchouli based scent. Kind of hippy meets fruity, and I dig it! So far it has a lasting essence if not over bodied all day. Definitely a lighter side to patchouli. The cardamom spice gives it a warmth and the peach gives it a little extra happy. Reminds me vaguely of a doggy bath scent we use (in a good way.)

I took a heart off because it lacked staying power on me, as others have said. I did like the scent, has some sexy swagger. Just wish it's dry down...didn't dry away....but maybe that's just me, or maybe of their was a body cream to layer it would last....I'm excited to try the others in this line

I like Histoires de Parfums 1969. Although it has patchouli notes, it's not at all a hippie scent. With its floral and coffee notes, somehow it makes me think of New Wave films from that era. It smells modern. On me, alas, it doesn't really grab hold and last.

I am a big fan of the perfume house, Histoires De Parfums, unfortunately to my nose 1969 isn't one of their masterpieces. This brew starts out with a blast of murk, synthetic citrus muddled with a hint of syrupy peach which disappears quickly leaving behind an almost wood cleaner-like smell. There is a hint of spice but it's dirty and reminiscent of sweat, not clean, earthy, and bright as the listed spice notes should be. The patchouli and rose notes are all but lost in this murky blend. The coffee and chocolate are present in the dry down but not in a pleasing way, they are more suited to ambient house scents than something one would want on their skin. 1969 is neither pleasant nor sexual as this brew is touted to be. Perhaps this murky, incohesive elixir would be better named 1769. Instead of a maid epitomizing the sexual revolution, this brew is a tavern house wench scrubbing wood tables with a dirty rag and linseed oil when she isn't serving the morning coffee to her unwashed customers. She can smell the bushel of rotting peaches she still has to peel for pies, mixing unsavorily with the other odors including the third rates spice and chocolate from the traveling merchant who wares are older than she. All in all a terrible mess of perfume whose edges are not blended but rather pushed together haphazardly like a kindergardeners attempt to make perfume out of household cleaners, pantry cullings, and the dregs of a few scented oil bottles. Old English wood cleaner, a cup of mocha joe, and the sweat from a medieval spice merchant. One heart. Given the scent the sillage and longevity are more than adequate.

I feel as though this could be a good unisex scent after also testing it on a male. It has a spicy, musky scent with a nice dry down and lingering bottom notes. It's a true woodsy oriental to me, which is my favorite variety of scent. I would strongly recommend this scent if you're a fan of scents like Elizabeth & James Nirvana Black, YSL Black Opium, and to some degree both Black or Velvet Orchid by Tom Ford (though both more floral but in same kind of vein of fragrance family). This was my first scent from this brand and I hope we see more scents from Histoires de Parfums here on Scentbird in the future!

Second time ordering this one and I love it! After not having it for a month I really missed it. Too bad The full bottle is so expensive because I can't afford that. I hope Scentbird never takes this one away, I need to order it every other month for a while. It's the perfect combo of sweetness and spice for me with a nice dose of amber, a little patchouli, a little fruit, floral and chocolate? It all adds up to a little sweet and spice that kind of reminds me of rootbeer. Some might not find this one very sweet, but I don't usually like sweet scents, so this is the one I go to when I want something sweet. Lasts a long time and the drydown hours later is awesome with some sandalwood in it I think.

I love this fragrance, it doesn't smell at all fruity, or flowery on me, instead I get lots of spice! I can smell cinnamon and a clove like scent very strongly, which tend to mellow over time to a creamy, sweet, spicyness. The sillage is moderate, and the longevity is excellent, lasting over eight hours without reapplication. At the end it becomes more of a skin scent, only lightly detectable.

This is an interesting scent. On first spritz there was no coffee, chocolate, musk or peaches i keep reading of. It was what I can only describe as salty pepper. The salt was overpowering & the peppery tickled my nose to sneezing After a while I did pick up on a much different fragrance. Something creamy and vaguely sweet. Have tried it 2 mire times and can still day it is interesting. I don't know what to make of it but am not revolted. Not sure how anyone is picking up peach, chocolate, coffee or even patchouli. Makes me think i received the wrong sample.

I wasn't sure how to take this scent at first. It reminds me of wood furniture polish. Like Pledge. It has a deep orange citrus...kind of oily smelling. If that's a thing. It's very dark and smells very mature (think elderly woman, but with "old money"). It also reminds me of Colonial Williamsburg when I first smelled it. Something "old world" about the scent. It has since grown on me. You have to give this one a chance if you don't like it immediately. Mist it/wear it time and time again and then you should either grow to appreciate it or really hate it.

I enjoyed this one. It is spicy and sweet. The first time I smelled it I thought of root beer. After it settles down it becomes a nice creamy scent. After using it for a while I could pick out the notes they are talking about, peach at first, then white chocolate and patchouli, and finally a light musk. But these are blended in a way that each one doesn't stand out all the time but more like a tapestry of the notes and every once in a while you will notice one or the other. At first I was spraying loads of this because the beginning would fade and I was getting to know it. But then I noticed even though the silage fades, I could still smell the drydown which is very nice the next morning. So after that I would just spray a few and enjoy it all the way down to the end. It also lasts days on my scarf. 2 weeks into using it I thought about going for another month of it because the scent is addictive, but after that I did get a bit tired of it. To me it is pretty sweet, and I don't usually go for sweet smells, I usually go for orientals. This had enough oriental notes in it that I enjoyed it as something a little different for me and it is perfect for spring. If you like super sweet scents, this might not seem that sweet to you. For me, it was just sweet enough that I got sick of it for everyday. I might pick up an alacart vial for every once in a while wear. The full bottle is super expensive!

While I would agree that this is different, it's not special. It smells a little like that pink Double Bubble bubblegum with a followed by a touch of cinnamon. Evokes the memory of a cheap drugstore scent that was popular among some of my friends while we were in middle school. My teenaged son, however, likened it to the spray we used last summer to ward off fruit flies. How's that for sexy? For all of the wonderful things I read online prior to adding this to my que, I am disappointed. The longevity is poor, maybe an hour at best. After that, my husband said he couldnt smell it at all on my wrists/neck or my clothing. The sillage, also disappointing😕 I guess I bombed this month with choosing this one.

This is amazing. It smells like peaches and roses and slightly musky on first spray. You can feel the patchouli and chocolate floating around somewhere in the background but it's not super prominent. I have been trying so hard to find something fruity that isn't reminiscent of bath and body works or escada and this is it. Absolutely beautiful. I got a bunch of compliments tonight on it wearing it out for the first time.
