Yesterday, we gave a standing ovation at our Digital Fragrance Awards Show to a true visionary. Douglas Little<\/a>, the genius behind Heretic Parfum<\/a>, was honored as the 2026 Trailblazer, and honestly, very few other titles would do him justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Bettina O\u2019Neill, EVP Business Development & Merchandising at Scentbird, shared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis award recognizes a visionary, someone who doesn’t follow rules or trends, but creates their own. Someone whose vision, originality, and fearless creativity inspire and shape the future of fragrance<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Douglas Little doesn\u2019t just meet that vision, he expands it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you know Douglas, you\u2019ll know that he has never been one to follow the crowd. When he was told early on that natural perfumery was only for “housewives and heretics,” he took the label with immense pride and built a goth perfumery empire on it. He is the man who gave us Nosferatu<\/a>, that hauntingly beautiful blend of wilting lilacs and cold earth, and Scandalwood<\/a>, the creamy, red-lipped whisper of a scent created with Dita Von Teese. And so many beautiful Dirty ones, we\u2019ve lost count. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His creations remind us that we all share a deep desire to be unique. In a world of mass-produced, identical scents, Douglas gives us permission to be different. His perfumes are raw and provocative, and they are all Dirty, the only way we want them on our skin<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If choosing a scent that makes you feel powerful, strange, and utterly yourself makes you a “heretic,” then that is a title we wear with pride. It\u2019s a badge of honor so precious that fans are adding it to their social media handles and bios (the @’s). Because being a heretic means having an opinion that\u2019s yours and yours alone. We love, cherish, and honor Douglas for burning the rulebook to keep the rest of us warm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To understand how he transitioned from the metallic air of a darkroom to the “sacred and profane” world of Heretic Parfum, we asked him to share the stories behind the scents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell us about your relationship with scent.  <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Scent is the most dangerous of the senses. It bypasses reason and goes straight to the animal\u00a0brain. One inhale and suddenly you\u2019re somewhere else, back in a memory, inside a fantasy, or\u00a0confronted with something you didn\u2019t know you were feeling. I\u2019ve always been fascinated by that\u00a0power. Perfume isn\u2019t just about smelling good to me, it\u2019s about seduction, provocation, and the\u00a0strange invisible energy we leave behind when we move through the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you come up with the idea of Heretic Parfum?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Heretic was born out of frustration with how safe and sanitized the fragrance industry had\u00a0become. Everything felt overly polished and overly commercial, like perfume had lost its soul. I\u00a0wanted to create fragrances that felt alive, using natural materials that are sensual, unpredictable,\u00a0and sometimes a little dangerous. The name \u201cHeretic\u201d felt right because the brand was about\u00a0rejecting the orthodox rules of perfumery and embracing something more rebellious, raw, and\u00a0honest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How have your tastes evolved over time?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the beginning I was drawn to bold, almost confrontational scents\u2014smoke, leather, animalic\u00a0notes, things that made people stop and feel something. I still love that darkness, but over time\u00a0I\u2019ve become more interested in tension and contrast. The push and pull between light and\u00a0shadow. A fragrance that\u2019s beautiful but slightly unsettling\u2026 something you can\u2019t quite place but\u00a0can\u2019t stop smelling.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you were to distill your personality into a fragrance, what would it smell like?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Probably the smell of a burning church. Charred woods, melting candle wax, clouds of ancient\u00a0incense, and stone soaked with centuries of ritual. Something sacred and profane at the same\u00a0time. I\u2019ve always been drawn to that tension, beauty and destruction, devotion and rebellion. A\u00a0fragrance that feels reverent but also a little dangerous.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your strongest scent memory?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The smell of a darkroom. My parents were photographers, so I grew up surrounded by film, cameras, and trays of developing chemicals under that eerie red light. The scent of developer and fixer is sharp, metallic, almost alchemical. I remember watching images slowly appear out of\u00a0blank paper like some kind of ritual. Something hidden suddenly reveals itself. In a strange way,\u00a0perfumery feels very similar, working with invisible materials until something emotional and\u00a0haunting emerges from nothing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s one rule in perfumery you think should be broken?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That fragrance has to be \u201cpretty.\u201d The most compelling scents are often the ones that make you\u00a0pause, maybe even feel slightly uncomfortable. Skin, smoke, earth, decay\u2026 those are the things\u00a0that make perfume feel alive. If a fragrance doesn\u2019t make you feel something primal, what\u2019s the\u00a0point?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your favorite way to connect with your audience?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Through the emotional reaction people have to scent. When someone smells a fragrance and it\u00a0unlocks a memory or a feeling they can\u2019t quite explain, that\u2019s the real connection. Perfume is\u00a0incredibly intimate. It lives on your skin, mixes with your chemistry, and becomes something\u00a0uniquely yours.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there a scent that feels symbolic of your success or journey?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For me it would be our Nosferatu<\/a>. Wilting lilacs and petrichor, the smell of flowers fading in\u00a0damp night air after the rain. There\u2019s something hauntingly romantic about it. Beauty right on the\u00a0edge of decay. That tension between darkness and beauty has always drawn me in, and it feels\u00a0very much like the spirit of my work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If fragrance were a form of storytelling, what would yours say?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It would probably read like a dark fairy tale, lush forests, candlelit rituals, forbidden gardens,\u00a0strange creatures moving through the shadows. A little gothic, a little sensual, slightly surreal.\u00a0The kind of story that lingers on your skin long after the last line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
